Abstract

RESEARCH QUESTION: How can sports facility architecture generate an improved quality of living and bring more value to the community? Obesity and mental illness are two major health issues in New Zealand today. These issues in addition to others investigated in this project can be addressed by the provision of spaces where people can socialise and exercise. The New Zealand Mental Health Foundation found that physical activity works as effectively as medication and psychotherapy in the treatment of mental health issues such as clinical depression. Clearly, exercise can also help combat obesity. This project addresses the inadequate provision of suitable indoor sport facilities in Auckland by designing a sports facility on the site of the existing North Shore Events Centre. The design draws on New Zealand and international precedents to produce a flexible, sustainable building, while expanding on the existing facilities. Issues of connectivity, accessibility and overall site layout are also addressed in the master plan. The resulting building will be suitable for community use and for large scale, national events, benefitting the local as well as the wider community.
