Abstract

AI poses significant risks to Indigenous peoples, including the loss and misrepresentation of cultural knowledge, bias and exclusion in AI systems, and violations of data sovereignty. It can also accelerate language erosion, spread misinformation, and contribute to environmental harm, while Indigenous communities are often excluded from AI development and policymaking. However, some are leveraging AI to revitalise Indigenous languages like te reo Māori.
