Abstract

Very little has been written about the history of the Pacific press itself or of its role in reflecting and reporting opinion in the Islands. As with any historical source, no newspaper can be studied outside its political and social context and this paper seeks to draw on Nelson’s interest in the Islands press as a mirror of expatriate life and Griffen’s use of political and social developments to examine the Rabaul Times against the background of the rapidly changing situation on the Gazelle Peninsula.
