Abstract
CENTRAL QUESTION
What are the essential tools, skills, and teaching strategies needed to ensure [QS] students are effective and confident from day one?
RESEARCH FOCUS
Mastering the "art and science" of measurement and estimating.
Specifically, the 2nd-year (NZQF Level 6) Measurement and Estimating courses.
Quantity Surveying practitioners in New Zealand need and expect their junior, and not so junior, employees to be able to efficiently and accurately read drawings, measure quantities and price construction works (prepare estimates) and other contract documents. So, what are the tools and skills students need to master to be effective measurers and estimators when first employed in the industry. A lack of some of these skills has been a criticism surfacing from time to time, generally from the “old hands” in the industry. This research investigation conducted a reflective case-study of Bachelor of Construction year 2 (Level 6 Measurement and Estimating courses using an observational and action research approach. The findings demonstrate the issues students faced, the facilitators witnessed, sharing the delivery plans, resources, and the 8-page NZIQS guides used to provide a real world practical and constructive learning environment. The research provides practical insights into what is essentially the art and science when learning how to read, interpret, know what to look for, and what might be missing in construction detailing, when measuring and pricing project documents. The aim being to ensure that new junior QS’ particularly, are ANZSMM (2022 edition) proficient when measuring trade work packages like groundworks, concrete, carpentry and steel for example, that is “regionally appropriate” as well, in the early years of industry practice readying
