Abstract

This is a discussion of theatre devising as a method for problematising the identities and social positions of student actors in the context of the colonial history of New Zealand and the function of devising within the context of tertiary theatre training. As a case in point, we examine the production of a theatre devising project within the Acting course in the Unitec Performing and Screen Arts Department in Auckland, New Zealand, which employed the history of the invasion of Waikato Māori lands by a settler colonial government in the mid 19th century, as the provocation for the creative process. For us devising is related to collective creation that doesn't not start from a pre-existing text. As stated in Making Performances: Devising Histories and Contemporary Practices, ‘devising is regarded as a process of generating a performative or theatrical event, often but not always in collaboration with others’ (Govan, Nicholson and Normington 2007: 4). Our understanding is that devising is a process with emphasis on the creative artist under the coordination of the the theatre director who plans the creative methods, provokes participants, selects the material and shapes the overall form of the performance using material generated by the creative team. Devising as a creative and teaching method is important for us as it enable the student/actor to learn how to make theatre in an integrated way
