Abstract

The use of technologies including robotic technologies have emerged as transformative tools, improving traditional farm practices worldwide. Notably, in the dairy industry, some of the major milk-producing countries have embraced robotic technology to address the issue of labour shortages and enhance productivity. However, the adoption of robotic technology remains low among dairy farm owners in Southland, New Zealand where the issue of labour shortages persists. This study aims to explor the factors influencing the adoption of robnotic technology among dairy farm owners in Southland, New Zealand. The objectives of this study are to: assess the knowledge and experience of dairy farm owners with robotic technology; examine the challenges and barriers faced by dairy farm owners when deploying robotic technology; and identify the motivations of dairy farm owners for adopting robotic technology. This research employed a survey design and utilised a questionnaire method to collect data from research participants. Out of the 50 questionnaires distributed, 31 valid responses were obtained. The result of this study revealed that the cost and maintenance associated with robotic technology is the major barrier to adoption among dairy farm owners in Southland, New Zealand. This study also showed the influential role of fellow farmers in motivating dairy farm owners to adopt robotic technology. The findings of this study hold significant implications for the Southland dairy industry. Specific recommendations highlighted in this research can promote the uptake of robotic technology among dairy farm owners in the Southland region of New Zealand.
