Abstract

This research examines the factors influencing the housing choices of international tertiary students in New Zealand, the accommodation challenges and the impact of accommodation on their academic success and personal well-being. The research used a positivist philosophy and deductive methodology. This was followed by a descriptive strategy along with a mono-method quantitative design within a cross-sectional time frame. The research suggested that the most significant factor for accommodation selection is privacy, followed by safety, cleanliness and affordability. Students in the South Island faced more concerns related to poor-quality housing than those in the North Island. Generally, across both islands, it was also found that due to high rental costs and a lack of available options, it was hard to find appropriate accommodation. Feeling safe, having a space for learning, cleanliness and privacy were also found as important factors to improve their academic outcomes, while housing stress has reduced the satisfaction and focus on learning. Recommendations for future research include adopting a mixed-method approach and conducting a longitudinal study and making comparisons between countries. Policy and practice improvements should focus on student housing guidance, affordable housing partnerships, and communication support.
