Abstract

RESEARCH QUESTION: How can the needs and wants of a "Baby-boomer" retirement community be successfully provided in a high-density, high-rise development on a site within Auckland's City Limits? Village in the Sky explores the issue New Zealand has with housing its ageing population, the Baby-boomers. By 2031, the project number of New Zealanders aged over 65 and over will amount to over 1,120,000, with the majority of these being part of the boomer cohort. Baby-boomers are the generation that changed the way we live. [...] This research focuses on creating an alternative housing solution for the proportion of the demographic who, by their own priorities and personal interests would prefer to live and retire within the city limits, rather than in a 'typical' suburban retirement village.
