Abstract
RESEARCH QUESTION
How can the events of the 2011 Christchurch earthquakes be memorialized in an architectural intervention that enhances the public space?
ABSTRACT
Memorial buildings are an essential part of the field of architecture. In some cities like Christchurch, memorial buildings to commemorate significant events like earthquakes are valuable.
The proposed project is an Earthquake Memorial Museum in the centre of Christchurch. The primary function of the Memorial Museum is to mark the earthquake that destroyed the city in 2011. It is both a single building design and part of the new urban renewal, through which, the 2011 earthquake can be remembered, and Christchurch will have a new landmark building to revitalize the city.
This project research views, through time and space, how to memorialize the past and renew it for the future when people rebuild a city, based on memorial architecture, museum architecture, urban history, urban memory, and urban texture. At the same time, Tā-Vā theory, architectural semiotics theories, conceptual design theories, and urban design of the public space theories are selected as the design drivers.
