Abstract

Periodontal disease (PD) is one of the most commonly diagnosed medical conditions in companion dogs, and if left untreated, it can cause pain and negatively affect their health and welfare. Preventive dental home care (PDHC) can substantially slow the progression of PD; however, little is known about dog owners' perspectives and implementation of PDHC in Aotearoa, New Zealand3. This study aimed to investigate dog owners’ knowledge of PD and PDHC, where they source information, their use of PDHC, and evaluate their perceptions of preventative dental education provided by veterinary professionals.
