Abstract
RESEARCH QUESTION: Can architectural design and research enhance the intersection of diverse culture within public buildings and spaces, and improve the existing benefits of social exchange within diverse communities? This research is premised on the understanding that there is definitely an architectural problem, the lack of socially cohesive public space to accommodate the diverse cultures in Auckland. The research sets out to refine this problem into an architectural question that will aid in design decisions regarding the architectural solution. This research aims to explore the cultural diversity of the Auckland region (predominantly South Auckland communities) and to consider the role architecture plays in cultural intersection. The proposition is that the built environment does not adequately reflect the city’s cultural diversity or the significance of its cultures(2). In the Intercultural City(3) diversity should be seen as the basis for building a socially sustainable eco-system. 2.
