Abstract

This paper introduces the concept of “moments of home” to explain how emotional attachment to place can emerge not through familiarity or permanence, but through intense, relational encounters. These moments occur in unfamiliar or strategically chosen spaces that host emotionally significant gatherings — often among dispersed individuals or families. Unlike conventional place attachment, which emphasizes rootedness and memory, moments of home are constructed through co-presence, ritual, and emotional urgency. Drawing on theories of place attachment, affective place-making, and transformative service, the paper offers a conceptual framework grounded in real-world examples. It argues for an expanded understanding of how transient and relational experiences can produce symbolic belonging, especially in fluid or proxy places. The implications extend to tourism, migration, and marketing, where emotional utility may outweigh symbolic identity in shaping the meaning of place.
