Abstract

This paper, presented at the ITP Symposium 2025 in Aotearoa, explores inclusion and disability in early childhood education (ECE), framing inclusion as a collective right rather than an individual responsibility. It examines six pedagogical approaches—Te Kōhanga Reo, Pacific Language Nest, Playcentre, Kindergarten, Reggio Emilia, and Special Education Settings—highlighting how each fosters belonging, relationality, and cultural identity for tamariki (children). The authors emphasize that inclusion requires flexibility, fluidity, and a commitment to making every space right for every child, challenging educators to center tamariki in their practice. The discussion is grounded in Māori and Pacific worldviews, advocating for holistic, community-driven models that honor diversity and dismantle barriers in education.
