Abstract

It goes without saying that this paper will, of necessity, present the merest sketch of an extremely complicated topic. In order to make this manageable, I have concentrated on Melanesia and Polynesia and omitted Micronesia and the metropolitan powers, Australia and New Zealand. Literature on the topic is scarce certainly in comparison with the libraries of books written about the Christian missions and churches. [Scott] Flower’s work on Islam in Papua New Guinea is a good example of what might be achieved on a country by country analysis, but even a single volume synthesis of the existing work would be welcome.
