Abstract

This thesis charts the history of a Māori woman and her roles in public sector leadership. It is written chronologically and weaves kaupapa Māori methods with autoethnography to enable and empower others to understand the experiences of various organisations/agencies that the author has worked for, each of whom were committed to implementing the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi, in a space now known as Māori Crown relations. Central to this thesis are the Māori Leadership qualities of – mana, manaakitanga, rangatiratanga, and, mauri ora. A commitment to traditional principles and being accountable to whānau, hapū and iwi, are themes which have been encouraged across the authors’ Public Services career. Fundamentally, this thesis reflects the problematisation of working in a bi-cultural environment where both the acculturation and enculturation of te ao Māori and te ao Pākehā impact on life experiences, both positively and negatively, challenging public sector workers to function effectively and authentically in a struggle without end. The learning from this life of service is that as “one door closes, one should look for a window”. This is the wero passed on to the next generation.
