Abstract
Youth mental health statistics indicate the ballooning crisis of young people in need of mental health support and counselling. Secondary school counsellors are the front line of responding to this need however engagement rates show disproportionate uptake by students (Pizzini, 2022). Through focus groups and surveys conducted in seven co-education state secondary schools across the Motu, an understanding of the constraints and facilitative factors students encounter when considering or seeking support from counsellors in New Zealand secondary schools has been achieved. This presentation reports on key recommendations stemming from these findings.
Analysis of the data identifies the factors that have the greatest impact for students. This information will enhance school-based counsellors’ understanding of student experience and could usefully inform the provision of counselling in New Zealand secondary schools. There is also the potential for this information and the recommendations reported here to encourage shifts in institutional practices and processes that will increase the willingness of young people to engage with the services secondary school counsellors offer. These changes would constitute positive steps toward improving mental health outcomes for young people in Aotearoa, New Zealand and beyond.
