Abstract

Research problem: How can eco-tourism revitalize rural areas of India? This research project aims to develop a design for an eco-resort in rural Kerala, India. The research is based upon the theoretical influence of Hitesh Mehta and his exploration of the principles of eco-tourism. An important element of this project is gaining a theoretical understanding of the forms of local architecture and their methods of construction. The project aims to deal with the site, climate and the culture in a detailed way. The site chosen for the project is located on an iconic island in the heart of the Vembanad Lake in Kerala. The site is currently a working plantation and the project is proposed as a way to promote conservation of the island.
