An unpublished research project submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the Master of Design by Project, Unitec Institute of Technology, New Zealand.

Abstract

This research project investigates the mechanics and processes of an artists’ practice in conjunction with the convention that art acts as a vehicle of communication. How well an artist communicates their thoughts, feelings and ideas to an audience is executed through the articulation of a learnt language and the refinement of skills and techniques. The level of success is often gauged by audience feedback and acceptance of the idea and, or with the physical art piece. The author employing ethnographic methodologies explores inter-relational connections influenced by the immediate environment, materials and participatory operation. This observational and immersive experience acts as a measurable gauge, aiding a deeper and more meaningful contextual and practical association, enhancing the making and communicative reach for many forms of art. QUESTION: How can the material, spatial and sensual properties of artworks challenge and extend the predominantly visual modes of address that create meaningful exchange between artwork and viewer?
