Abstract
Vagahau Niue, like many Pacific indigenous languages, have concepts that enable deep thought and meaning making. Within academic scholarship however, no written descriptions of such concepts are evident. This paper centres on “moki”, a Niue concept associated with deep analysis and meaning making that shifts across diverse contexts in which moki is applied. Drawing from Niue concepts, as opposed to Western concepts, leads to more meaningful understanding of the fluid contexts in which songs, chants, and poetry are made sense by tagata Niue
