The major objective of the research reported in this article was to identify the factors that would encourage international employees to stay in their employment at the Auckland District Health Board (ADHB), thereby reducing staff turnover and retaining talent. This research draws from theoretical and organisational turnover models and a questionnaire sent to 200 international staff employed by the ADHB. The 107 survey responses were followed up by qualitative interviews conducted with ADHB management staff. The results disclose some unaddressed needs among international staff concerning job satisfaction, training, work/life benefits and organisational commitment. The results also reveal some discontent. These staff members indicated that there were few opportunities for occupational advancement, little intercultural communication and minimal integration of international staff into the ADHB workforce. By addressing these issues, the ADHB could reduce turnover, retain talent and refine its strategic performance objectives for future international staff.en_NZ
