Abstract
This research explores New Zealand’s current trends, development and future needs for the ageing population with regards to retirement living and housing for the aged in Auckland. Specifically focusing on the needs and wants of t he Baby Boomer generation, and how this can be translated into an alternative housing model within Auckland. The aged population (65 years plus) has increased to 12%, which equates to one in eight currently accounting for the age group in New Zealand, with an estimated increase to 19% in 2025, with further increase of up to 25% or an equivalent to one in four expected by 20501. The impact of this growth will have consequences both socially and economically with limited availability of “resources, community services, pensions, health care, workforce and the provision of alternative housing for older people.” Project site: Corner of Nuffield Street and Mahuru Street in Newmarket, Auckland.
