    Abstract
    This paper presents preliminary findings from an ongoing research project on the role of online social media and activism in political processes and political participation in Kazakhstan that uses as a case study the civic conflict in the town of Zhanaozen in 2011 and the engagment of netizens as bloggers in the subsequent events.
